For The Overwhelmed Business Owners - Starting To Plan For An Exit

As a business owner, you could easily feel overwhelmed with the thought of exiting your company. It often feels challenging to even know where to start. In this article, we'll answer the most common questions we receive so that you'll have a good idea if Washington Avenue Advisors is the right fit for you.

Where do we start?

We begin with a meaningful conversation about you, your family, and your financial goals. Next we’ll discuss how those goals can connect with your business. We want to hear what’s important to you and help bring alignment and confidence to your decisions.

Business Attractiveness + Exit Readiness Assessment (Program)

This program is designed to help business owners attract and retain key people as well as provide continuity for your people and customers. We’ll help you identify gaps through a comprehensive analysis of both your personal and professional goals. Then, we’ll create a written, step-by-step plan that will help you achieve your desired outcome that positions you for a successful exit or succession.

A prioritized plan

We help you understand what factors will impact the value of your business and then we work with you to determine what it's currently worth.

From there, we'll use data from the exit readiness assessment to create a realistic plan for how to help you protect, maintain, or grow that value. And finally, depending on what stage you are at, we'll help you collaborate with your team of other advisors (bankers, CPAs, brokers, etc...) who will support you through this journey.

When is the right time to transition?

We often hear the question; “When should I begin to prepare to exit my business?” Many advisors will suggest 3-5 years beforehand, however, a more helpful answer is the sooner the better. There are so many decisions to be made and the sooner you start, the more time you'll have to make them thoughtfully.

What about key people still involved in my company?

Depending on your business, you may have key employees who are integral to the success of your company. We work with you to develop a plan for what will happen with these individuals when you exit. This could include creating incentives for them to stay with the company during and after the transition.
